How To

How To Survive A Home Invasion

Home invasion is a scary thought, especially when there are kids involved. We didn't expect to live through home invasion when we started our journey with installing a home security system. Here are the lessons we have learned thus far.

  1. Do not let your children see the attackers. Two men broke into our home upstairs while our kids were sleeping. They were taken downstairs by us until police arrived. The police arrived and our kids were not hurt. However, the traumatizing images did enough to make them feel scared.
  2. Lock All Valuables. We keep valuables locked up in a safe in our bedroom. Even if someone is able to break into the house they won't have access.
  3. Keep an eye on Burglars. We live in a neighbourhood that is notorious for burglaries. We are always on the lookout for suspicious cars and people.
  4. Make sure you have a backup plan. If anything happens to us, our family will be taken care of financially. We also have a plan in place to leave the country if necessary.
  5. Be prepared. You must be prepared if you find yourself in a position where you have to defend your life. Always have food, water, or other supplies on hand.
  6. Call 911 First. If you find out that someone has broken into your home, call 911 immediately. It's better to call the authorities than to wait for them to break down your door.
  7. Use Common Sense. Do not allow anyone to enter the house if they aren't welcome. You should not invite strangers to your home.
  8. Ask for help from your neighbors or other people in the area. If you feel uneasy, call friends or neighbors. They can be there to help you while you call 911.
  9. Keep Calm and Do What Police Officers Tell You To. Stay calm and do exactly as instructed by officers. Don't run away or resist arrest.
  10. Take photos of all evidence. Photograph any evidence that is found during an investigation. You can take pictures of fingerprints, blood samples, or other evidence.
  11. Local Law Enforcement. File a report with law enforcement even if no one was injured. This will help to prevent future crimes.
  12. Get in touch with your insurance company immediately. Get in touch with your insurance company immediately. Tell them everything that happened and ask for an adjuster to come out to assess the damage.
  13. Your personal belongings should be removed. Remove personal belongings before leaving the scene. Don't wear expensive jewelry. Take it off and put it away.
  14. Clean Up After Yourself. Take care of yourself. Make sure you empty the trash, clean up any broken glass, and lock all doors.
  15. Don't Talk About What Happened. Don't talk about anyone's past. It is possible that someone might use the information against you.
